Some places you visit. Zhangjiajie you photograph. Our photography and nature tours pair the surreal quartz-sandstone pillars that inspired the floating mountains of Avatar with our signature traditional Hanfu and Miao ethnic travel-photography service, so you leave with images that look like stills from a Chinese fantasy epic rather than ordinary holiday snaps. We are a Zhangjiajie-based local operator with an 80-person team of guides, photographers and trip designers who live here and shoot these peaks year-round.
Travel photography: three tiers, one private session
Every shoot is fully private and styled on location, with hair, traditional Hanfu or Miao ethnic costumes and a local photographer who knows exactly where the light lands at each hour. Choose the tier that fits your trip:
- Essential, from $299 — a focused session at one iconic backdrop, professionally edited images, ideal for solo travellers and couples who want one knockout set.
- Premium, from $599 — a longer shoot across multiple locations and wardrobe changes, with more edited photos and richer styling. Couples can add a drone for sweeping aerial frames.
- Royal, from $1,299 — our flagship: extended styling, several signature backdrops, premium retouching and the most complete gallery. Families can add a group portrait.
Book our most popular 5-day Zhangjiajie private tour and a complimentary 2-hour Hanfu photo session worth $299 is already included. For full styling options and behind-the-scenes detail, see our photography and cultural experiences page.
The xianxia and Avatar backdrop
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, part of the Wulingyuan UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a forest of thousands of sheer sandstone columns. The pillar at Yuanjiajie known as the Southern Sky Column was renamed “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” in 2010 after it helped inspire the film’s floating peaks. Wrapped in drifting mist at dawn, these spires are the definitive xianxia (Chinese fantasy) setting — and a flowing Hanfu robe against them is what makes the shot unforgettable.
To reach the high viewpoints you can ride the Bailong Elevator, a glass double-deck lift built onto a cliff face and recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s tallest outdoor elevator. From platforms such as Yuanjiajie’s Grand View deck and Tianzi Mountain, the pillars rise straight out of the cloud.
Best natural backdrops and when to shoot
Timing is everything for these images. The most atmospheric “sea of clouds” usually forms on the clear morning after overnight rain, roughly between 7 and 9am, when mist still clings to the peaks. Autumn — especially the second half of October — adds gold and red foliage against the grey cliffs. Our photographers plan each session around the light, the weather and the crowds. Dramatic nature beyond the pillars
- Tianmen Mountain — home to Heaven’s Gate, the cliff-hugging glass skywalks and the dizzying 99-bend mountain road, reached by one of the world’s longest passenger cableways. (Note: the upper cableway section is undergoing maintenance through 2026–2027; we will confirm the current routing and the best alternative when you book.) See our Tianmen Mountain guide.
- Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge — a 430-metre glass-bottomed span suspended around 300 metres above the canyon floor, designed by architect Haim Dotan: thrilling to walk and spectacular to photograph.
- Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — endless trails, viewpoints and quiet corners away from the main decks, detailed in our national forest park guide.
