Getting from Shanghai to Zhangjiajie is straightforward by air, with high-speed rail as a scenic alternative.
By Air (Recommended)
Direct flights link Shanghai with Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG), typically taking around 2.5 hours — the easiest and fastest way to cover the distance. The airport is only about 10 km from the city centre.
By High-Speed Train
High-speed trains depart Shanghai Hongqiao Railway Station for Zhangjiajie West Railway Station in roughly 9 hours, passing through Hangzhou, Nanchang and Changsha along the way. It’s a comfortable ride through the heart of southern China, but flying saves the better part of a day.
Our Recommendation
We generally recommend flying from Shanghai so you arrive fresh and ready to explore. Shanghai also pairs beautifully with Zhangjiajie for travellers who want to combine a cosmopolitan city with China’s most dramatic natural scenery.
