If China feels like a daunting first big trip, you are exactly who we look after best. China Fantasy Travel is a Zhangjiajie-based local operator with an 80-person team of guides, photographers and trip designers, and we build 100% private, tailor-made journeys for travellers from the US, UK, Australia and beyond who are visiting China for the very first time.
China is easier to visit in 2026 than you think
The biggest worry for first-timers is usually the paperwork, and for many travellers it has all but disappeared. China’s unilateral visa-free policy has been extended through 31 December 2026, so ordinary passport holders from the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, Malaysia and dozens of other countries can enter for tourism and stay up to 30 days with no visa at all.
If you hold a United States passport, the rules are a little different: the US is not currently on the 30-day visa-free list, but you have two easy options. If your journey takes you onward to a third country, you can use the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit available through many major airports; otherwise a standard Chinese tourist (L) visa is straightforward to obtain. Either way, China is very accessible for first-time American visitors.
Rules can change and depend on your nationality and exact plans, so it is always worth a quick check before you book flights. Our full breakdown is in the China visa guide for 2026, and our trip designers will confirm the right entry route for your passport when they build your itinerary.
Safe, cashless and English-speaking the whole way
China is widely regarded as one of the safest destinations in the world for foreign travellers, with very low rates of street crime and excellent infrastructure. The thing that surprises most first-timers is how cashless daily life has become. The simplest fix is to link your Visa or Mastercard to Alipay or WeChat Pay before you arrive; you can now do this without a Chinese bank account, and the same QR code works for taxis, restaurants, shops and attractions. We recommend carrying a little cash and a physical card as backup, and our step-by-step walkthrough lives on the how to pay in China page.
On the ground, you are never on your own. Every China Fantasy Travel itinerary includes an English-speaking private guide who handles communication, navigation and any hiccups for you, plus 24/7 emergency support from our local team. We are licensed with the Chinese tourism authority, and there are no forced shopping stops and no hidden commissions, ever.
What your private trip includes
We do not run group tours with strangers. Your trip is yours alone, designed around your pace, interests and budget. Every tailor-made itinerary includes:
- A dedicated English-speaking private guide throughout your journey.
- A private driver and vehicle, so you travel on your schedule, not a coach timetable. Some premium vehicles offer extras such as charging ports; just request in advance.
- Airport and hotel transfers included, so the very first thing you see in China is a familiar face holding your name.
- Comfortable hand-picked hotels, all park and attraction tickets, and a clear value breakdown of what you are paying for.
- A written itinerary and quote within 2 hours of your enquiry.
For a sense of real numbers, our most popular 5-day Zhangjiajie private tour runs from about US$650 to US$1,200 per person depending on group size, and full transparency on cost is laid out on the Zhangjiajie private tour cost page and our China tour packages and prices.
The classic route, with a fantasy twist
Most first-time visitors start with the classic Golden Triangle: Beijing for the Great Wall, Forbidden City and Temple of Heaven; Xi’an for the Terracotta Army and ancient city wall; and Shanghai for the Bund and a glimpse of modern China. China’s superb high-speed rail network links all three, and 10 to 14 days is the comfortable window for a first trip. Explore our Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai tours to see how each city fits together.
Where we are different is what comes next. As a Zhangjiajie operator, we add the scenery that inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains of Avatar: the surreal quartz-sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, the cliff-top views of Tianmen Mountain, and deep Miao and Tujia cultural experiences. It is the kind of otherworldly landscape that turns a good first trip into an unforgettable one. See it on our 10-day Beijing, Xi’an and Zhangjiajie private tour.
