By High-Speed Train (New and Recommended)
The 502 km high-speed line opened on 1 July 2025. Around 20 to 30 bullet trains a day run between Chongqing and Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, taking just 2 to 3.5 hours. Most services leave from Chongqing East Railway Station, with others from Chongqing West, North and the airport station. The ride is fast, comfortable and scenic, threading through the hills of western Hunan. Second-class fares start around US$38, with first and business class running higher, up to about US$128.
By Air
Direct flights still operate on selected days between Chongqing Jiangbei International Airport (CKG) and Zhangjiajie Hehua Airport (DYG), with around 1 hour in the air. On paper that is faster than the train, but once you add airport transfers, check-in and security, the door-to-door difference is small. Flights are also less frequent and more weather-sensitive, so for everyday travel the train is now the more flexible option.
