The honest answer is “it depends” — but it depends on a few clear things: how far you’re flying, whether it’s your first time in China, and how much you want to slow down rather than tick boxes. As a Zhangjiajie-based operator who designs private, tailor-made China trips, here’s how we help travellers from the US, UK and Australia size their trip realistically.
Quick answer by trip type
- One city or one region (Zhangjiajie only): 3-5 days.
- First-time China classic (Beijing-Xi’an-Shanghai): 10-12 days, comfortably.
- Classic plus one scenic extension (e.g. Zhangjiajie or Guilin): 12-16 days.
- In-depth China (multiple regions, slower pace): 16-21+ days.
If you’re flying long-haul, budget a day at each end for travel and jet lag, then build the itinerary around the days that actually count.
The first-timer classic: about 10-12 days
For a first visit, the “Golden Triangle” of Beijing, Xi’an and Shanghai is the gold standard, and 10-12 days lets you do it without a single rushed morning. A balanced split looks like this:
- Beijing — 4 days: the Great Wall, Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven and a hutong day.
- Xi’an — 2-3 days: the Terracotta Army, the ancient city wall and the Muslim Quarter.
- Shanghai — 2-3 days: the Bund, Yu Garden, and a half-day to nearby Suzhou or Hangzhou.
The cities are linked by China’s superb high-speed rail. Beijing to Xi’an is roughly 4.5-6 hours by bullet train, and Xi’an to Shanghai about 6-9.5 hours depending on the service, so most travellers fly the longer leg to save a half-day. See our 10-day Beijing-Xi’an-Zhangjiajie private tour for a worked example.
Adding Zhangjiajie: about 3-5 days
Zhangjiajie — the towering sandstone pillars that helped inspire Avatar‘s floating mountains — is the single best add-on to the classic route, and the reason most of our guests find us. Bolt 3-4 days onto a Beijing-Xi’an-Shanghai trip and you’re looking at a rich 13-16 day itinerary. Because we live here, we slot it in seamlessly rather than treating it as an afterthought. There are direct flights and high-speed rail connections from all three classic cities, so it rarely costs you more than a travel half-day.
A focused Zhangjiajie trip: 3-5 days
Short on time, or here specifically for the scenery and photography? Zhangjiajie stands on its own. Our most popular package is 5 days, which gives the region room to breathe:
- Days 1-2: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and Wulingyuan — the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, Yuanjiajie and the world’s highest outdoor lift, the Bailong Elevator. (The park ticket is valid across multiple days.)
- Day 3: Tianmen Mountain — the cable car, the glass skywalk and Heaven’s Gate cave.
- Days 4-5: the Grand Canyon glass bridge, plus a traditional Hanfu or Miao photography session and a Tujia or Miao village experience.
Three days covers the headline sights; five lets you swap queues and forced marches for golden-hour photography and genuine cultural time. For a two-region version, the 7-day Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang trip adds the lantern-lit riverside ancient town of Fenghuang. Full pricing is on our Zhangjiajie tour cost page.
Longer, in-depth trips: 16-21+ days
With more than two weeks you can travel slowly and add the regions that turn a good trip into a great one. Popular layers on top of the classic route include Guilin and Yangshuo for the Li River karst scenery, Chengdu for the Giant Panda Breeding Base and Sichuan cuisine, a Yangtze River cruise, or Yunnan’s ethnic-minority towns. As a national premium operator we build these as a single seamless private journey — one team, one standard — rather than a string of handoffs between agencies.
