How to Plan a Private China Tour

Planning a tailor-made private China tour

Planning a private China tour is far simpler than the country’s scale suggests once you break it into a few clear decisions. As a Zhangjiajie-based operator with our own 80-person local team of guides, photographers and trip designers, we build every itinerary from scratch around you, on a 100% private basis, never a group tour with strangers. Here is exactly how to plan it, step by step, and how our 2-hour custom itinerary process works.

Step 1: Pick your destinations and number of days

Start with what you most want to feel. If it’s the surreal sandstone pillars that inspired the floating mountains of Avatar plus deep Miao and Tujia culture, Zhangjiajie is the heart of your trip. A focused 5-day Zhangjiajie tour covers Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Tianmen Mountain and the glass bridge comfortably. Add the ancient riverside town of Fenghuang and you’re looking at a 7-day Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang itinerary.

Want the classic icons too? We design multi-city national routes such as a 10-day Beijing, Xi’an and Zhangjiajie tour, or standalone Beijing, Xi’an, Shanghai and Guilin programmes. A good rule of thumb is two to three full days per major city, plus travel days. China’s high-speed rail makes this easy: Zhangjiajie connects to Changsha in roughly 2.5 to 3.5 hours by train or about an hour by flight, with onward links nationwide.

Step 2: Decide your hotel level

Tell us your comfort standard and we match it precisely, from clean, well-located comfortable hotels to four- and five-star city properties and boutique stays inside or beside the park. Hotel level is the single biggest lever on your final price, so it helps to set this early. Every option we propose is chosen for location and reliability, not commission.

Step 3: Choose your experiences

This is where a tailor-made trip earns its keep. Our signatures are things you simply can’t book off a coach tour:

  • Travel photography in traditional Hanfu or Miao ethnic dress, shot by our own photographers at the best light and locations. Packages run Essential from $299, Premium from $599 and Royal from $1,299; couples can add drone footage and families can add a group portrait. See the best photo spots in Zhangjiajie.
  • Cultural experiences from about $80 per person, up to deep Miao immersion around $300 per person, covering villages, cuisine, music and craft. Browse our photography and cultural experiences.
  • The scenery itself, paced for your fitness with cable cars and lifts to spare your legs. Our park guide and Tianmen Mountain guide explain the layout.

One planning note: the National Forest Park entrance ticket is valid for four days, so a multi-day base lets you return without re-paying. The most comfortable weather and clearest views are usually April to May and September to November.

Step 4: Set a realistic budget

Think in ranges rather than one number, and look at what’s included. Our most popular trip, a private 5-day Zhangjiajie tour with a private guide, private driver, comfortable hotels and all park tickets, runs from about US$950 to US$1,200 per person solo, US$750 to US$950 as a couple, and US$650 to US$850 for a family of four, and includes a complimentary 2-hour Hanfu photo session worth $299. A 7-day Zhangjiajie and Fenghuang trip is roughly US$1,800 to US$2,800 per person; family packages start around US$2,500 and fully bespoke luxury from US$5,000. Step 5: Sort your visa and payment

Entry rules have eased. Through 31 December 2026, UK passport holders (from 17 February 2026) and Australian passport holders can enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days. US citizens still need a tourist (L) visa. Always confirm current rules in our 2026 China visa guide. We accept PayPal, Stripe and major cards, and Wise; more in how to pay in China.

How our 2-hour custom itinerary process works
