Why we built this route
The Avatar peaks are the headline, but western Hunan has a second act most tours never show you: Fenghuang. After the mountains we take you two hours south to a riverside ancient town that glows with lanterns at night, a place our local team loves as much as the peaks. Seven days lets the trip breathe: photography mornings in Zhangjiajie, a Tujia or Miao village meal, and slow evenings by the Tuojiang River. This is the route we send couples and photographers on.
A one-week private Hunan route combining Zhangjiajie’s Avatar Mountains, Fenghuang Ancient Town’s riverside lanterns, and Furong Town’s waterfall village — with photography-friendly pacing, no shopping stops, and a local team based right here.
Best For
- Photography and culture lovers — three distinct visual worlds in one week
- Couples and families who want a scenic, unrushed private route
- Travelers with one week in China or Hunan
- Guests who prefer fewer long-distance city transfers
- Visitors who want Zhangjiajie mountains plus two ancient towns — not just one
Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1: Arrive in Zhangjiajie
Private airport or train station pickup. Check into your hotel near Wulingyuan or Zhangjiajie city. If arrival time allows, take a light evening walk or sample local Tujia-style street food. Rest early — the mountain days start tomorrow.
Day 2: Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — Yuanjiajie (Avatar Mountains)
Enter the park with your private guide who knows which entrances, shuttle routes and viewpoint timing avoid the heaviest crowds. Walk through Yuanjiajie’s sandstone pillar area — the landscape that inspired the floating mountains in Avatar. Your guide helps with photo angles, crowd-aware routing, and pacing for your group’s walking ability. Photography tip: Late morning light on the pillars works best from the viewing platforms near the Bailong Elevator area.
Day 3: Tianzi Mountain and Golden Whip Stream
Morning at Tianzi Mountain viewpoints — fewer visitors than Yuanjiajie, wider panoramas. Afternoon options: walk the gentle Golden Whip Stream valley trail, or add a more challenging hike if your group prefers. Families and seniors can take the stream path at a slow pace with plenty of photo stops.
Day 4: Tianmen Mountain — Heaven’s Gate and Cliff Walk
Take the world’s longest cable car to Tianmen Mountain. Walk the cliffside glass skywalk, climb the 999 steps to Heaven’s Gate, and take in wide-angle mountain views. Your guide adjusts the pace for seniors or children. Photography tip: The cable car ride itself offers dramatic shots — sit on the left side going up for the best valley views.
Day 5: Glass Bridge or Baofeng Lake — Transfer to Furong Town
Morning: choose between the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge (thrilling canyon walk) or Baofeng Lake (gentle boat ride between karst peaks). After lunch, private transfer to Furong Town (芙蓉镇) — a 2,000-year-old Tujia village built on a waterfall. Arrive by late afternoon. This stop is what makes this route different from standard Zhangjiajie tours.
Evening: watch the waterfall light up from a riverside restaurant. The waterfall dinner view here is one of the most photographed scenes in western Hunan — and almost no group tours stay overnight. Photography tip: The waterfall is lit from behind after sunset. Shoot from the stone bridge or the lower viewing platform for the best reflection shots.
Day 6: Furong Town Morning — Fenghuang Ancient Town
Morning walk through Furong Town’s old stone lanes, Tujia wooden houses and the waterfall viewpoint in daylight. Optional: try on traditional Miao or Tujia costume for photos (your guide can arrange this with a local shop).
After lunch, transfer to Fenghuang Ancient Town (about 1.5 hours). Check into your riverside hotel. Late afternoon walking tour: the Rainbow Bridge, stilt houses along the Tuo River, and the old city wall. As dusk falls, the riverside lanterns light up — Fenghuang at night is why photographers and couples love this route.
Day 7: Fenghuang Morning Culture — Departure
Morning: walk the quieter side streets before the day-trippers arrive, or visit a local Miao embroidery workshop. Depending on your departure time, you can add a short boat ride on the Tuo River. Private transfer to Tongren, Zhangjiajie or Changsha for your flight or train onward.
Why This Route Is Different
Most Zhangjiajie tours end at Tianmen Mountain and call it done. This route adds Furong Town (waterfall village) and Fenghuang Ancient Town (riverside lanterns) — two stops that turn a mountain trip into a photography-and-culture journey. And because we are based in Zhangjiajie, we know the transfer timing, the best viewpoints, and which local restaurants and photo spots the group buses skip.
Why Not a Group Tour for This Route?
- Furong Town is often skipped or rushed — most group tours treat it as a 90-minute photo stop. A private tour lets you stay overnight and see the waterfall lit up.
- Fenghuang at night is the whole point — but group tours often arrive mid-morning and leave by 4pm, missing the lantern-lit riverside entirely.
- Photography timing matters — your guide can adjust for golden hour, evening lanterns, and morning mist, instead of following a fixed bus schedule.
- No shopping detours — our route is built around sightseeing and local experiences, not commission stops.

Tour FAQ
Can I add Furong Town to a shorter Zhangjiajie trip?
Yes — a 5-day Zhangjiajie tour can include Furong Town as a day trip, but we recommend staying overnight to see the waterfall lit up. For the full experience including Fenghuang, 7 days is ideal.
Is this route suitable for seniors?
Yes. We can reduce walking distance in Zhangjiajie, use cable cars and elevators, choose hotels with elevators, and add more rest stops. The Furong Town and Fenghuang portions are gentle walking at your own pace.
How do I get the final price?
Send your travel month, group size, hotel preference and must-see places. We will suggest a practical route and a clear quote — not a vague range.
