Family China Tours

A family on the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge
A family on the Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge

China is one of the most rewarding places on earth to travel with children, and Zhangjiajie may be the most kid-thrilling corner of all of it: real-life floating mountains, a glass bridge in the clouds, glass elevators bolted to sheer cliffs, and Miao villages where children can pound their own sticky-rice cakes. As a Zhangjiajie-based operator with our own 80-person local team, we build 100% private, tailor-made family trips only, never group tours with strangers, so the pace, the stops and the snack breaks all flex around your kids, not a tour leader’s schedule.

Why China, and especially Zhangjiajie, works for families

China is famously easy and safe to move around with kids, and recent visa rules make a short, focused trip more practical than ever, with many travellers from the US, UK, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore and Malaysia now eligible for visa-free transit of up to 240 hours (10 days) when transiting onward to a third destination. We will tell you honestly whether visa-free entry fits your route or whether a standard tourist visa is the cleaner choice; see our China visa guide for 2026 for the current picture.

Zhangjiajie itself is a natural fit for younger travellers. The headline sights are dramatic but easy to reach, the scenery does the heavy lifting (no museum fatigue), and a private guide and driver mean no long coach transfers or early-morning crowds. It is the kind of place where a seven-year-old and a grandparent can both leave grinning.

Kid-friendly highlights they will actually remember

  • The real Avatar mountains. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, part of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wulingyuan scenic area, is a forest of more than 3,000 quartz-sandstone pillars. One of them, the towering Southern Sky Column, was officially renamed Avatar Hallelujah Mountain after it helped inspire the floating peaks in the film, an instant hit with kids who know the movie.
  • Glass elevators up a cliff. The glass-sided Bailong Elevator, recognised as the world’s tallest outdoor lift, carries you hundreds of metres up the rock face in a couple of minutes, with the canyon dropping away beneath your feet.
  • The glass bridge. The glass-bottomed bridge over Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon stretches about 430 metres across the gorge, roughly 300 metres above the valley floor; equal parts thrilling and giggly for brave young walkers (and an optional stop for those who would rather watch from solid ground).
  • Cable cars with a view. Scenic cable cars float you over the peaks, swapping uphill walking for one of the most fun rides in the park. We choose the routes that are open and best suited to your family’s appetite for heights.
  • Sticky-rice-cake making in a Miao village. In a Tujia or Miao village, kids can take a turn pounding glutinous rice into ciba cakes, try on colourful ethnic dress and meet local families; hands-on culture that lands far better than any guidebook.

Family-friendly pacing, built around your kids

Because every trip is private, we design days that breathe. That means later starts, shorter walking stretches with cable cars and the elevator doing the climbing, a proper sit-down lunch, and the flexibility to swap a viewpoint for ice cream and a rest when little legs have had enough. Our English-speaking guides are used to travelling with children and quietly handle the logistics: tickets, queues, bathroom stops and the best photo angles, so parents can simply enjoy the day.

Private car, private guide, zero hassle

Your family travels with its own private English-speaking guide and a private driver and vehicle for the whole trip, with airport and hotel transfers included. There are no forced shopping stops and no hidden commissions, just your family and a local team who actually live here. We are licensed with the Chinese tourism authority and offer 24/7 emergency support, so help is one message away if a child wakes up unwell or plans need to shift.

Optional family portrait session

Many of our families add a traditional Hanfu or Miao-dress photo session with one of our in-house photographers, turning the Avatar peaks into the backdrop for a portrait you will frame for years. Sessions start from $299, and a family group portrait can be added for everyone together. You can read more on our photography and cultural experiences page.

Family packages and what they include

Our private family packages start from about $2,500 and are always quoted as a value breakdown rather than a bare number: private guide, private driver and vehicle, comfortable family-friendly hotels, all park tickets and transfers. For a sense of how the most popular Zhangjiajie itinerary prices out per person, see our Zhangjiajie private tour cost guide, or browse full China tour packages and prices. We are a full national operator too, designing multi-city family journeys that link cities such as Beijing, Xian, Chengdu and Zhangjiajie into one seamless private trip; explore our custom China tours to start shaping yours.
