Best China Itinerary for First-Time Visitors

The Great Wall of China
The Great Wall — a first-timer highlight

For a first visit to China, one route consistently delivers: Beijing, Xian and Shanghai — the imperial capital, the home of the Terracotta Army, and the country’s dazzling modern metropolis. It is the classic for good reason. But if you want a trip people actually gasp at, you add Zhangjiajie, the real-life Avatar mountains, for a wow factor the big cities simply can’t match.

Why the classic three-city route still wins

Beijing, Xian and Shanghai give first-timers China’s greatest hits without the guesswork. In a single trip you stand on the Great Wall, walk the Forbidden City, meet the roughly 2,200-year-old Terracotta Army, and watch the future arrive on Shanghai’s Bund. The three cities are linked by China’s superb high-speed rail and frequent flights, so you cover enormous ground comfortably — no long, tiring overland slogs.

  • Beijing — the Great Wall (we favour the restored Mutianyu section, less crowded and beautifully scenic) and the vast Forbidden City, plus the Temple of Heaven and old hutong lanes.
  • Xian — the Terracotta Army at the Mausoleum of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, where Pits 1, 2 and 3 reveal thousands of life-sized warriors. Round it out with the city’s intact Ming-era city wall.
  • Shanghai — the riverfront Bund, the futuristic Pudong skyline, classical Yu Garden, and the elegant French Concession.

Why adding Zhangjiajie gives the trip its wow factor

The three cities are about civilisation; Zhangjiajie is about jaw-drop nature. The sandstone pillars of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park — a UNESCO World Heritage Site — inspired the floating Hallelujah Mountains in James Cameron’s Avatar, and one towering pillar (the former Southern Sky Column) was officially renamed “Avatar Hallelujah Mountain” in 2010 after the film. Rising among the peaks is the Bailong Elevator, recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s tallest outdoor elevator, which glides you hundreds of metres up the cliffside in well under two minutes.

Nearby Tianmen Mountain adds the dramatic 99-bend mountain road, cliff-edge walkways and the natural arch of Heaven’s Gate. (Please note: at the time of writing the upper section of the Tianmen cable car is under long-term maintenance and some of the glass walkways close for upkeep, so we route guests via the shuttle road and lower cableway — your trip designer will confirm exactly what is open for your dates.) This is also where our home-ground advantage shows on the Zhangjiajie leg: as a Zhangjiajie-based operator we live here, and we add what no city tour can — traditional Hanfu and Miao photography against the peaks, and authentic Miao and Tujia cultural experiences.

Getting in is easier than ever in 2026

Entry has rarely been simpler. Through 31 December 2026, ordinary-passport holders from the UK, Australia and many other countries can enter mainland China visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism — no embassy appointment, no paperwork. US travellers are not yet in the 30-day scheme but can use China’s generous visa-free transit policy (currently up to 240 hours / 10 days when continuing on to a third country or region), which suits multi-city routes well. Rules change, so confirm the current details in our 2026 China visa guide before you book flights.
