Prices are fixed in Chinese yuan; the US dollar figures are converted at the Bank of China rate on the day your itinerary is confirmed. What is included in a private Zhangjiajie tour?
A private tour includes your guide, vehicle, hotels and the main scenic-area tickets. On the 3-day tour: a private vehicle and driver, airport or railway-station transfers, an English-speaking local guide, two nights at a comfortable hotel beside the Wulingyuan entrance to the Forest Park (Days Inn by Wyndham or similar) with breakfast, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park entry with the eco-bus, the Bailong Elevator, the Tianzi Mountain cableway, the Ten-Mile Gallery mini-train, and Tianmen Mountain entry including the cable car and escalators, with no shopping stops. Not included: international and domestic flights, China visa, your own travel and medical insurance, lunches and dinners unless stated in your confirmed itinerary, gratuities and personal expenses. How many days do you need in Zhangjiajie?
4–5 days is comfortable for most first visits. 3 days is a focused trip covering the two signature areas, Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain) and Tianmen Mountain. With 4–5 days you add the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge and an easier pace. 6–7 days adds Fenghuang Ancient Town. 10 days or more lets you combine Zhangjiajie with Beijing, Xi’an or Shanghai. Can I visit Zhangjiajie on my own?
Yes. Plan for four things. First, Forest Park tickets are sold through the WeChat mini program Zhangjiajie Travel Assistant (张家界旅游小助手), which the park recommends, with timed entry by gate. Second, at the Wulingyuan (east) entrance to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park you choose Line A or Line B when you book: Line A goes up via Tianzi Mountain and down via Yuanjiajie, Line B the other way round. Changes are best made online in advance; at the gate you can only change if spare tickets remain. Third, re-entering on your second or third day also needs a booking, and same-day changes depend on spare tickets. Fourth, you enter by scanning your passport, and children under 14 get free park admission with their own passport. Getting between scenic areas and handling all of this in Chinese is the part a private tour handles for you.
When should I avoid Zhangjiajie?
Avoid the National Day Golden Week in the first week of October and the May Day holiday in early May if you can; they are the busiest times of the year. On crowded days the scenic areas cap visitor numbers and pause entry once they are full. If these are your only dates, we book your entry time slots in advance and adjust the order of the day to the crowds on the day.
Does rain or fog close Zhangjiajie’s attractions?
Generally no. The Bailong Elevator and cableways in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and the Tianmen Mountain cable car normally keep running in rain, fog and wind unless the scenic area issues a special notice, and the Grand Canyon Glass Bridge stays open in rain. From 13 October 2026 the main Tianmen Mountain cableway is not carrying passengers and everyone goes up by Line C (see our Tianmen Mountain cable car in 2026); in ice, snow, heavy fog or heavy rain the mountain may change the route at short notice as well. If a notice is issued, we tell you the same day and rearrange your plan. (Checked with the scenic areas by phone, September 2026.)
Is Zhangjiajie suitable for seniors?
Yes, with the right route. The Bailong Elevator and Tianzi Mountain cableway in the Forest Park, and the cable car and escalators at Tianmen Mountain, save most of the climbing up and down. Small wheelchairs can go up Tianmen Mountain, although the paths at the top have many steps.
