Good news for 2026: most international travelers can now visit China with little or no visa paperwork. Here are your three main options. Visa rules do change — most of the policies below are confirmed through 31 December 2026 — so always check the latest official list with the National Immigration Administration (en.nia.gov.cn) before booking, or simply ask our team.
1. 30-Day Visa-Free Entry (around 50 countries)
As of 2026, ordinary passport holders from roughly 50 countries can enter China visa-free for up to 30 days for tourism, business or visiting family and friends. This covers most of Europe, plus Australia, New Zealand, Japan and South Korea — and the United Kingdom and Canada were added on 17 February 2026. If your country qualifies, you can simply book your flights and come.
2. 240-Hour Visa-Free Transit (10 days)
Travelers from 55 countries — including the United States — can transit China visa-free for up to 240 hours (10 days), as long as you enter and exit through one of the 65 designated ports and hold an onward ticket to a third country or region. Beijing, Shanghai, Guangzhou, Xi’an and the other gateways used to reach Zhangjiajie are all covered. This is the usual route for US visitors on a short China trip.
3. Tourist (L) Visa
If you don’t qualify for visa-free entry, or you’d like to stay longer than the visa-free window allows, the standard Tourist (L) Visa is straightforward. You apply at a Chinese visa application center with your passport, a completed form, a photo and your travel details. We can provide a confirmed itinerary to support your application.
Quick Guide by Nationality
- Most of Europe, UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea: 30-day visa-free — no visa needed for a typical trip
- United States: not on the 30-day list — use the 240-hour (10-day) visa-free transit, or apply for a tourist visa for a longer stay
- Other nationalities: apply for a Tourist (L) Visa
