How to Pay in China

China is one of the most cashless societies in the world, and paying as a foreign visitor is far easier than it used to be. Here’s how to handle money smoothly on your trip.

Mobile Payments: Alipay & WeChat Pay

Almost everyone in China pays by scanning a QR code with Alipay or WeChat Pay — from restaurants and taxis to street stalls. Both apps now let international visitors link a foreign Visa or Mastercard, so you can pay like a local without a Chinese bank account. We recommend installing Alipay or WeChat Pay and linking your card before you arrive.

Cash Still Works

Chinese yuan (RMB) cash is still accepted, especially in smaller towns and rural areas around Zhangjiajie, so it’s wise to carry some as a backup. You can withdraw RMB from ATMs that accept international cards — look for UnionPay, Visa or Mastercard logos.

Credit Cards

International credit cards are accepted at most international-brand hotels and larger establishments, but not everywhere, so don’t rely on them alone. UnionPay is the most widely accepted card network in China.

Tipping

Tipping is not customary in China and is never expected in restaurants or taxis. On private tours, a tip for your guide or driver is appreciated but entirely optional.

Travel Worry-Free

On our private tours, all the essentials — guide, driver, tickets and pre-agreed inclusions — are arranged and paid in advance, so you only spend on personal extras. Have a question about your trip budget? Message us on WhatsApp at +86 189 7441 2915.
