Wondering how many days you really need in Zhangjiajie, and how to spend them? Below are the three itineraries our local trip designers build most often — a fast-paced 3-day essential, an in-depth 5-day (our most popular), and a relaxed 7-day pairing the Avatar mountains with the riverside lanes of Fenghuang. Every plan below is 100% private and fully tailor-made: your own English-speaking guide, your own private driver and vehicle, and a pace set entirely around you — never a coach full of strangers.
How to choose: 3, 5 or 7 days?
Zhangjiajie rewards time. The core of the region is Wulingyuan Scenic Area (home to Zhangjiajie National Forest Park), whose single entry ticket is valid for several days so you can come and go across the towering quartz-sandstone pillars. Add Tianmen Mountain on the city’s edge, and you already have a full and varied trip. Here is roughly what each length covers:
- 3 days — the essentials: the Avatar mountains, Tianmen Mountain and the glass bridge, at a brisk pace.
- 5 days — the same icons plus the quieter trails, sunset viewpoints, a glass-skywalk day and time for a Hanfu or Tujia cultural experience. This is the sweet spot.
- 7 days — everything in the 5-day plan, then a high-speed train down to Fenghuang (Phoenix) Ancient Town on the Tuojiang River for two slower, more cultural days.
The 3-day Zhangjiajie essential
Best for travellers with limited time who still want the headline sights. It moves quickly, so we keep transfers tight and start early.
- Day 1 — Avatar mountains: Enter Zhangjiajie National Forest Park and ride the Bailong Elevator, the world’s tallest outdoor lift at 326 metres, up the cliff face to Yuanjiajie. Here you’ll stand before the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain — the soaring pillar formerly known as the Southern Sky Column, one of the formations associated with the floating peaks of Pandora.
- Day 2 — Tianzi Mountain & Golden Whip Stream: Sweeping panoramas of thousands of stone columns from the Tianzi Mountain viewpoints, then a gentle, mostly flat walk along the Golden Whip Stream, one of the park’s most scenic valley trails.
- Day 3 — Tianmen Mountain: Ride one of the world’s longest mountain cableways, walk the cliff-hugging glass skywalks, and climb the 999 steps to Heaven’s Gate, the great natural arch in the mountain. We’ll confirm the current cableway and shuttle arrangements with you before departure, as sections undergo periodic maintenance.
The 5-day in-depth Zhangjiajie tour (most popular)
This is the trip most of our guests choose — the icons plus the calmer corners, with breathing room to photograph, hike and experience local culture rather than rush. It’s the basis of our 5-day Zhangjiajie private tour.
- Day 1 — Arrival & warm-up: Airport or train-station pickup and transfer to your hotel (included), an orientation walk and an easy first viewpoint to settle in.
- Day 2 — Yuanjiajie & the Avatar mountains: The Bailong Elevator, the Avatar Hallelujah Mountain and the First Bridge Under Heaven, with quieter side trails your guide knows for cleaner photos.
- Day 3 — Tianzi Mountain & Ten-Mile Gallery: Grand ridge-line panoramas, the leisurely Ten-Mile Natural Gallery beneath the peaks, and a sunset viewpoint where the light catches the spires.
- Day 4 — Tianmen Mountain & glass bridge: The Tianmen cableway, glass walkways and the 999 steps to Heaven’s Gate, plus the option of the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon glass bridge — 430 metres long and suspended around 300 metres above the canyon floor.
- Day 5 — Culture & photography: A complimentary 2-hour Hanfu photo session (worth $299) among the peaks, or a deeper Tujia or Miao cultural experience, before your departure transfer.

The 7-day Zhangjiajie + Fenghuang plan
Our richest single-region itinerary, blending the dramatic peaks with the lantern-lit waterfront of Fenghuang. Days 1–5 follow the in-depth plan above; days 6–7 add the ancient town. This is our 7-day Zhangjiajie + Fenghuang private tour.
- Day 6 — Transfer to Fenghuang & the old town: Around 200 km south. By high-speed train it’s about an hour; by private car around three to four hours with scenic stops. Afternoon exploring the stilted wooden houses lining the Tuojiang River, then the bridges and riverside glowing at dusk.
- Day 7 — Fenghuang at your own pace & departure: Morning light is the photographer’s hour here — Hanfu or Miao portraits along the water if you like — followed by quiet lanes, local Hunan flavours and your onward transfer.
