Sichuan is one of China’s richest travel provinces — giant pandas in Chengdu, fiery cuisine, Tibetan-edge mountain scenery, and the turquoise lakes of Jiuzhaigou. But planning a private Sichuan tour from overseas can be confusing because the province is large, the best sights are spread out, and the seasons matter. Here is how to think about it.
How Many Days Do You Need?
- 3–4 days: Chengdu only — Panda Base, Jinli Ancient Street, People’s Park teahouse, Sichuan food stops, plus a day trip to Leshan Giant Buddha or Mount Qingcheng
- 6–8 days: Chengdu + Jiuzhaigou Valley (seasonal) — this is the classic Sichuan nature route, best from September to early November
- 10–12 days: Chengdu + Jiuzhaigou + Zhangjiajie — an all-nature China journey combining Sichuan’s lakes and mountains with Hunan’s pillar peaks
Where to Go in Sichuan
Chengdu — Pandas, Teahouses and Food
The Chengdu Panda Base is the best place in China to see giant pandas up close — arrive at opening time (around 7:30am) when the pandas are most active. After the pandas, Chengdu offers Jinli Street for snacks, the People’s Park for tea and people-watching, and some of China’s best street food. Sichuan hotpot, dan dan noodles, mapo tofu, and tea-smoked duck are the essentials.
Leshan Giant Buddha — Day Trip from Chengdu
The world’s largest stone Buddha, carved into a cliff face at the confluence of three rivers. About 2 hours from Chengdu by private car. Can be combined with a boat ride for the full-frontal view, or walked via the cliffside stairs.
Jiuzhaigou Valley — Turquoise Lakes and Waterfalls
Jiuzhaigou is a UNESCO World Heritage site in northern Sichuan, famous for its multi-colored lakes, waterfalls and autumn foliage. Best visited September–early November. It requires a flight from Chengdu plus 1–2 full days in the park. Winter visits are possible — frozen waterfalls are beautiful — but some trails may be closed. Spring and summer are green and less crowded than autumn.
Western Sichuan — Tibetan Towns and Grasslands
For travelers with more time, western Sichuan offers Tibetan culture, high-altitude grasslands, and mountain passes. Towns like Kangding and Tagong feel completely different from the lowland cities. This area is best May–October and requires careful altitude planning for travelers not used to elevation.
Combine Sichuan with Other China Destinations
Chengdu + Zhangjiajie is a strong nature-focused combination — pandas and Avatar Mountains in one trip. Chengdu + Chongqing gives you pandas and hotpot with dramatic city views. For a first China trip, Beijing + Xi’an + Chengdu (pandas) + Zhangjiajie (nature) covers history and scenery in about 14 days. See our Sichuan private tours →
