Tianmen Cave & the 999 Steps: Heaven’s Gate, Zhangjiajie

Tianmen Cave and the 999 Steps: Heaven’s Gate on Tianmen Mountain

Short answer: Tianmen Cave is a natural arch through the summit ridge of Tianmen Mountain, 131.5 m (431 ft) high, 57 m wide and 60 m deep; from the square below, it looks like a door opened in the mountain. The 999 steps, the Stairway to Heaven, climb 218 m (715 ft) straight up to the arch, most of them at more than 37 degrees; beside them a five-stage escalator does the same climb for CNY 32. From 13 October 2026 you reach the cave on Line C: the express cable car from the mountain gate lands you at the cave square. Be on the square by 08:00, climb with the morning light on the arch, and look back down the flight from the top: that is the visit that works.

The arch

Tianmen Cave filled with cloud, seen from the walkway above the arch
Cloud pouring through the arch: a common sight on a misty morning.

The express cable car stops, you walk a short cliff path, turn a corner, and Tianmen Cave is in front of you: an opening in the ridge with cloud moving through it. Almost everyone who comes to Zhangjiajie has seen the photograph. Standing on the square below is when you understand the size: 131.5 m from floor to roof, as tall as a thirty-storey building, and 57 m across.

It is natural. Local records date it to a collapse of the rock in the year 263, and the mountain has been called Tianmen, Heaven’s Gate, ever since. Inside, the arch is 60 m deep, a tunnel rather than a doorway: pale rock streaked with grey, ferns in the crevices, and a still pool of water on the floor that holds the sky. There is usually wind in it. After rain the cloud is pushed out through the opening in a long plume, which local people call Tianmen breathing out mist; on most days you simply feel the draught the moment you step under the rock. On the far side of the arch is the entrance to the escalators that carry you on to the summit.

The 999 steps

The full flight of 999 steps from the gateway at the bottom to the arch at the top.

The Stairway to Heaven runs straight up from the square to the arch: 218 m long, with most of the flight steeper than 37 degrees. The treads are shallow, so you climb in single file with a hand on the rail. Five landings break the climb, and each has a name: in Chinese tradition they stand for wealth, happiness, long life, rank and good fortune, which is why many Chinese visitors treat the 999 as a small pilgrimage and pause at every one. Each is worth a stop anyway, to turn round: the square shrinks below you and the mountains open out behind.

Fast walkers do it in about 15 minutes; most people take 30 to 40 with photographs, and everyone turns round at the top to look back down the flight. From the top, the people still climbing look like marks on the rock, and that view, from the arch down the stairs, is the picture many visitors remember from Tianmen Mountain. The summit is 5 to 8 degrees cooler than the city and there is wind on the steps, so a light jacket is welcome. In 2018 a production car was driven up the whole flight to the arch, and the film of it is how many people first hear of Zhangjiajie.

If you would rather not climb

Midday on the steps; the escalator runs in the tunnel beside the flight.

A five-stage escalator runs in a tunnel beside the steps and reaches the arch in a few minutes, for CNY 32 per person. Families with older travellers or young children take it as a matter of course; a popular combination is to climb the steps and ride the escalator down, or to climb a landing or two for the view and come back down to the escalator. From the arch to the summit there is a second escalator, seven stages long and included in the ticket, which climbs through the inside of the mountain and lets you out on the summit.

For older travellers, the whole climb from the square to the summit can be done without a single step: the five-stage escalator, then the seven-stage one. The square itself is level. The summit paths are a different walk, with stretches of steps along the cliff; we decide with you how much of the loop to do. Our Tianmen Mountain glass walkways page covers them.

How to reach Tianmen Cave from 13 October 2026

From 13 October 2026 the park runs one route, Line C, set out step by step in the table above; the one decision on the way is steps or escalator. Line C replaces the main cableway from the city and the bus up the 99-bend road: the express cable car climbs from the mountain gate to the cave square in a few minutes, and the 99-bend road unwinds beneath the cabin the whole way. The current operating status is on our Tianmen Mountain cable car page, and the whole mountain is covered in our Tianmen Mountain guide.

Allow about 4 to 6 hours including queuing, nearer 7 if you walk the full summit loop and go up to Yunmeng Peak. Details on timing are on our page on how long Tianmen Mountain takes.

When to go

Tianmen Cave and the Stairway to Heaven under fresh snow on Tianmen Mountain, Zhangjiajie
The steps under snow: on icy days everyone takes the escalator.

On a national-holiday morning in October 2026, visitors who reached the express cable car station at 07:30 were standing on the cave square at 08:00 without a queue. The morning light falls full on the face of the arch and gives the clearest photographs; on a misty day the arch comes and goes, and it is worth waiting ten minutes for the cloud to open. The day after rain is the clearest of all, and on an autumn morning the cable car sometimes climbs out of the city’s cloud into sunshine, with the arch standing above a white sea. In winter the steps can be closed by ice, and on those days everyone takes the escalator.

The three pictures people take: the full flight and the arch from the square below; the view back down the stairs from one of the landings; and, from inside the arch, the sky and the far mountains framed by the rock.
