Tianmen Mountain or Zhangjiajie National Forest Park? (2026)

Tianmen Mountain or Zhangjiajie National Forest Park?

They are two separate scenic areas with separate tickets, 40 minutes to an hour apart by car. The Forest Park has the sandstone pillars often linked to Avatar; Tianmen Mountain has Tianmen Cave, the 999 steps and the 99-bend road. On a first visit with one full day, we suggest the Forest Park. Tianmen suits an arrival or departure day.

Many travellers ask this when they have only one full day in Zhangjiajie. This page covers what each place offers, when to choose which, and how most people end up seeing both. For each place in more detail, see our Zhangjiajie National Forest Park guide and our Tianmen Mountain guide; for gates, lines and time slots, see our Zhangjiajie ticket rules page.

1. How the two compare

The Forest Park is a large area of sandstone pillars in Wulingyuan, linked by lifts, cable cars and eco-buses, and needs at least a full day. Tianmen Mountain is a single mountain on the edge of Zhangjiajie city, with a cableway, a winding road, Tianmen Cave and clifftop walkways. On Tianmen’s Line A ticket route, the visit takes about 4–6 hours overall. The two tickets are separate.

Zhangjiajie National Forest Park (Wulingyuan) Tianmen Mountain
What it is Set up in 1982 as China’s first national forest park, according to the Hunan Forestry Department. Part of Wulingyuan, a UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site since 1992. A national 5A scenic area. Its main peak is 1,518.6 m; the Hunan Department of Culture and Tourism describes it as the highest mountain in Zhangjiajie.
Where Wulingyuan, about 40 minutes to an hour’s drive from Zhangjiajie city. About 8 km south of the city centre. The lower cableway station is in the city, a little over 20 minutes’ drive from Zhangjiajie West Station.
What you see Wulingyuan has more than 3,000 sandstone pillars. The main areas are Yuanjiajie (the Avatar pillars), Tianzi Mountain, Golden Whip Stream and the Ten-Mile Gallery. Tianmen Cave, the 999 steps, the 99-bend mountain road, and the clifftop plank walks and glass walkway on the summit.
How long At least one full day; 2–3 days to see it all. The ticket is valid for four days. Half a day to a day. On Tianmen’s Line A ticket route, the visit takes about 4–6 hours overall.
Getting around The Bailong Elevator, cable cars and park eco-buses, with more walking between viewpoints. Mostly cableways, park buses and escalators inside the mountain, with less walking.
Tickets A four-day ticket. Each entry is booked for a gate and a time slot. One ticket is one line (A, B or C) and one time slot.
Published visitor figures In 2025 Wulingyuan received 1,007,600 inbound visitors, the first year above one million (Hunan Provincial Government). In 2023 it received more than 5 million visitors in a year for the first time (Zhangjiajie Municipal Government). From January to mid-September 2025 it received nearly 500,000 overseas visitors (CCTV).

The sections below explain how the lines work only as far as this choice needs. For the three Tianmen lines, see our Tianmen Mountain English map; for the Forest Park gates and areas, see the free English map of the park.

2. Only one day: which should you choose?

On a first visit with one full day, go to the Forest Park: the sandstone pillars are there, and one day covers Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain. Choose Tianmen if you are with older relatives or small children and want less walking, have a train or flight that day, stay in the city, or want Tianmen Cave and the cliff walkways.

  • Local travel planners in Zhangjiajie give similar advice: with one day, go to Wulingyuan; with older relatives or little time, Tianmen is the easier day.
  • Tianmen is mostly cableways, park buses and escalators, with less walking. Some travellers say it feels less like being out in nature for that reason. If you want to walk mountain paths, bear that in mind.
  • The reasons travellers give usually fall into four groups: short on time or staying in the city, choose Tianmen; here for the sandstone pillars, choose the Forest Park; want cableways and glass walkways, choose Tianmen; want to walk slowly and take photos, choose the Forest Park.

3. The usual plan: you may not have to choose

Often “only one day” really means one full day plus half a day on arrival or departure, and that half day suits Tianmen. The Tianmen cableway starts in the city, a little over 20 minutes’ drive from Zhangjiajie West Station, and your luggage stays in our vehicle. Keep the full day for the Forest Park.

  • Tianmen on the morning you leave. Join the cableway queue at 8 am. Line A takes about 4–6 hours overall, so plan on a train at 4 pm or later. Line A comes down by the Tianmen Cave express cableway to the Mountain Gate, then a shuttle bus back to the city, and we drive you on to the station. For the timing in detail, see how long Tianmen Mountain takes.
  • Tianmen on the morning you arrive. Arrive at Zhangjiajie West around 9 am and you can be in the cableway queue before 10. After Tianmen, go to Wulingyuan to stay, and enter the Forest Park from there the next day without going back to the city.
  • Both on the same day. We do not plan it this way. Tianmen takes 4–6 hours, the Forest Park needs a full day, and they are 40 minutes to an hour apart by car, so you would rush through both.

4. A day in the Forest Park: do you have to choose between Tianzi Mountain and Yuanjiajie?

No. One day covers both. Our one-day route enters the park at the East Gate (Wujiayu), takes the Bailong Elevator up to Yuanjiajie, the eco-bus on to Tianzi Mountain, the Tianzi cable car down, and then the Ten-Mile Gallery mini-train. To avoid the queue for the Bailong Elevator going up, the same route can run in reverse.

  • This is Line B at the East Gate: the Bailong Elevator up and the Tianzi cable car down. The reverse, Line A, goes up by the Tianzi cable car and down by the Bailong Elevator. If you book the wrong line, it usually cannot be changed at the gate; change it online in advance (see our ticket rules). More on the lift itself in our Bailong Elevator guide.
  • Golden Whip Stream and Yangjiajie do not fit into the same day. They need time of their own, which is why we suggest 2–3 days to see the whole park. For the walking trails, see our Zhangjiajie hiking guide.
  • The cable cars, the Bailong Elevator and the eco-buses have no fixed last run; the park sets closing times each day by visitor numbers, so we plan your way down early.

5. Travelling with older relatives or children

Both places have plenty of lifts and buses, and how much you walk can be planned around your fitness. Neither is step-free: both have many steps, and step-free access is limited. At Tianmen, the 999 steps up to Tianmen Cave can be replaced by an escalator with a separate ticket. We plan each day around who is travelling.

  • Older travellers at the Forest Park: with a foreign passport, entry is free from age 65 and half price from 60 to 64. The eco-bus is still paid, and the cable cars and the Bailong Elevator have no senior rate for foreign visitors.
  • Children: China’s policy is free entry under 14 at both places, and at Tianmen it also covers the cableway and escalators. For foreign passports, we confirm before your trip.

6. Rain, fog and maintenance days

In ordinary rain or fog, both places stay open. The Forest Park’s cable cars and Bailong Elevator keep running, and so do Tianmen’s cableway and glass walkway, unless the park issues a notice. When ice, snow, dense fog or heavy rain make the Tianmen mountain road unsafe, the park switches Lines A and B to Line C for the day.

  • Each year Tianmen has a few maintenance days when only some lines run. In 2026, for example, the Tianmen Cave express cableway was closed for maintenance from 9 March until it reopened on 20 March, and the main cableway closed for its annual inspection on 1 April, when only Line C ran. All three glass skywalks on the summit were open when we checked on 1 October 2026. We check for your dates.
  • Fast-track passes are currently suspended at both places, and no date has been given for them to return.

7. What about the Glass Bridge?

The Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon Glass Bridge is a third, separate scenic area with its own ticket, and it needs a booking in advance. The bridge is 430 m long and 6 m wide and opened in August 2016. With only one day, we would put the Forest Park and Tianmen ahead of it. See our Glass Bridge guide.

Use your first and last day

You do not have to choose between Tianmen Mountain and the Forest Park. By using your arrival or departure day, most people can see both. Tell us when you arrive, when you leave and whether you are coming by train or plane. We will plan which day goes to which place, which gate you use and when you set off, and we handle tickets, real-name booking and luggage. You do not need a Chinese phone number or WeChat.

Sources and data notes

Reviewed in September 2026. We compared Hunan provincial and Zhangjiajie municipal government notices, published figures from the Hunan Forestry Department and the Hunan Department of Culture and Tourism, local news reports on the Tianmen Mountain routes, our own team’s experience at both places, and travellers’ reports. Visitor figures are published figures (government and state media) for different years and groups, so they are not directly comparable. Lines, lifts and ticket rules can change; we check them again for your travel dates.
