Short answer: the park has five ticket gates, and you choose one when you buy your ticket, together with an entry time slot. Pick the gate by where you want to start that day. If you booked the wrong gate, change it online in advance; at the gate itself there is often nothing left to switch to.

Why the gate matters
The park is large and the five gates sit on different sides of the same mountains. Enter at the wrong one and the day’s route no longer works. Zhangjiajie tickets are sold by gate and by time slot, so the choice is made at the moment you book, not when you arrive.
Which gate for which plan
Staying in Wulingyuan town: the East Gate. Many first days start here. Line A goes up by the Tianzi Mountain cable car and comes down by the Bailong Elevator; Line B is the reverse.
Staying in Zhangjiajie city, or walking Golden Whip Stream: the South Gate. The stream walk starts here. It is about 5 minutes on foot to Oxygen Bar Square, where you either ride the Huangshizhai cable car or take the stone steps.
Yangjiajie: the West Gate, then about 5 minutes by shuttle bus to the cable car’s lower station.
Tianzi Mountain from the north: the North Gate.
Shuiraosimen: the Middle Gate.
Opening hours
The park opens at 07:00, half an hour earlier on public holidays, and runs 07:00 to 17:00 in winter. The last-entry time is posted at the gate on the day, and that notice is the one to follow.
Documents
Tickets are real-name. At the turnstile you scan your passport. Children under 14 enter free on their own passport.
Days two, three and four
The entrance ticket is valid for four consecutive days, but each day’s entry is booked separately. If you need to change the gate or the time slot at short notice, the change is only possible if that slot still has capacity, so book each day ahead rather than deciding at the gate.

Yes. The ticket is valid four days, but tomorrow’s entry needs its own booking for the South Gate.
