Huanglong Cave (Yellow Dragon Cave): four levels, an underground river, any weather
Short answer: Huanglong Cave is the best-known show cave in Zhangjiajie, 15 minutes east of Wulingyuan town in Hekou Village. It has four levels; the visitor route is about 3.2 km, of which 800 m is by boat on an underground river. Allow 2 to 3 hours. It does not depend on the weather: rain, fog and winter make no difference inside. It is more than a rainy-day choice, though. The lighting was replaced in May 2025, and the Dinghai Shenzhen stalagmite and the Dragon Palace are worth the visit on a clear day too. We live in Zhangjiajie, and the cave fits into most of our itineraries of three days or more.
Facts checked 24 October 2026: cave figures from the park’s description and the 2025 relighting from Xinhua (21 May 2025); ticket prices from the online price list and opening hours as confirmed in October 2026; on-the-ground details from visitors’ reports to October 2026.

Why it is worth a visit
Zhangjiajie’s reputation is built on what stands above ground. Under the same mountains there is another landscape. Huanglong Cave has four levels, two dry and two with water, and is the best-known show cave in the Wulingyuan area. The route takes in the dry halls, the Dragon Palace on the fourth level and an 800 m boat ride on the Xiangshui River. The whole cave was relit in May 2025, and the stalagmites and columns read far more clearly than in the older photographs.
Two things justify the trip on their own. The first is Dinghai Shenzhen, a stalagmite 19.2 m high and as thin as a needle, which the park insured for CNY 100 million in 1998. The second is the Dragon Palace, the biggest hall in the cave, with more than 1,700 stalagmites standing like a forest. From the viewing platform it looks like a city underground.

The 800 m on the Xiangshui River is the easiest ten minutes of the visit. You sit, the rock passes overhead, the lights sit on the water, and the river stays at about 16°C all year, so in summer the cave feels air-conditioned.
What you see along the way
The first chamber is the Dragon Dance Hall, high and wide, which gives your eyes time to adjust. Beyond it is the jetty on the Xiangshui River. This is the boat section, 800 m and about ten minutes, passing under the Celestial Bridge, a natural rock span 22 m long and 17 m above the water. You leave the boat and climb, past the Celestial Water and along Stone Pillar Street, where the columns line up like a street. The climb ends in the Dragon Palace on the fourth level, the largest hall, with its 1,700 stalagmites and Dinghai Shenzhen standing in the middle. After the Dragon Palace comes the Celestial Waterfall, three springs falling 27.3 m from the roof, the loudest point in the cave. If you want twenty minutes more, the Maze is near the exit: about 138 m, lightly lit, with a separate ticket sold at the gate.

How the visit goes and how long it takes
The route is about 3.2 km: 2.4 km on foot and 800 m by boat. There are a lot of steps. That is simply true, but they come in sections, with level ground and places to rest between them. A visitor of normal fitness walks it in a little over 2 hours; with older parents or small children allow 3. The route runs one way through the cave, and the 800 m boat ride is part of it; the order depends on how the park routes groups that day.

If you buy the guide option you collect an earpiece at the gate, and a guide sets off once a group has gathered, talking all the way to the boat. If you would rather not wait for a group, you can walk on your own; the route is one way and you cannot get lost. There is also a short undeveloped side cave inside, unlit and without a boardwalk, which you can add at the gate if you want more.
How to get it right
- Wear shoes with grip. The floor is wet in places and the steps are damp. Sandals and long skirts get in the way.
- Bring a light jacket. It is about 16°C inside. Coming in from 35°C outside feels good for the first ten minutes and cool after half an hour.
- With older travellers or children under six, put the cave in the morning while energy is high, take it slowly, and allow 3 hours. For anyone who cannot manage stairs, this is not a wheelchair site; in that case we swap it for the boat on Baofeng Lake.
- It lies in the same direction as the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon and its glass bridge, about 20 minutes away, so cave in the morning and bridge in the afternoon, or the reverse, works well. It also pairs with Baofeng Lake; both are water sites with no mountain to climb.
- On rainy days, in heavy fog, or in winter when a mountain road closes, it is the first place we move into the plan. Do not treat it only as a fallback, though. The mountains look better after rain, with cloud in the valleys, so we prefer to give the cave the half day that was free in the itinerary anyway.
Tickets
In October 2026 the package ticket is CNY 121 per person: entry 60, the Xiangshui River boat 36, and the guide 25. The Maze is CNY 15 on top. Online sales are usually the package only; at the gate you can buy the parts separately, for example entry alone, or entry without the guide. Children and older visitors get reductions; the ticket office applies the rule in force that day. If Huanglong Cave is in your itinerary, the ticket is already in your tour price and we buy it for you.
Getting there
From Wulingyuan town it is about 15 minutes by taxi, around CNY 20; bus No. 1 costs CNY 2 but runs infrequently. From Zhangjiajie city or the airport it is about 42 km and an hour; from Zhangjiajie West railway station about 34 km. The Grand Canyon glass bridge is about 20 minutes away and Baofeng Lake under 10 km. Our guests arrive by car at the entrance, the driver waits in the car park, and you walk straight on to the next stop when you come out.
One more cave worth knowing about: 17 km further east of Wulingyuan is Longwang Cave, run by the same company, which reopened in March 2026 after an upgrade. Adults pay CNY 70, the cave stays at 15 to 20°C, and a visit takes 1.5 to 2 hours. You do not need both. Huanglong is closer to Wulingyuan and better set up for guided visits, so it is the one we normally schedule.
When to go
The cave is open all year, and the temperature inside never changes. In high season, April to mid October, it opens at 07:30; in low season at 08:00; last entry is about an hour before closing. Summer is the most comfortable time: 35°C outside, 16°C inside. During the National Day week and the school holidays the guided groups queue, and being at the gate at opening time saves the most time. On wet and foggy days it is the one site in Zhangjiajie that is not affected at all.

Frequently asked questions
Is Huanglong Cave worth visiting?
Yes. It is the best-known show cave in the Wulingyuan area, Dinghai Shenzhen and the Dragon Palace rank among the best cave features in China, and the lighting was replaced in 2025. If you have only two days and must choose between the mountains and the cave, choose the mountains. With three days or more, it fits.
How long does Huanglong Cave take?
Two to three hours. The route is 3.2 km, of which 800 m is by boat.
Can older people and children manage it?
Older visitors of normal fitness can. The steps come in sections with places to rest; allow 3 hours and take it slowly. Children under six usually need to be carried for the last stretch. It is not suitable for wheelchairs.
Is it a good choice on a rainy day?
Yes. Nothing inside depends on the weather. It is more than a rainy-day option, though; it stands on its own.
Does the ticket include the boat?
The package ticket includes the boat and the guide. At the gate you can buy entry alone and add the boat or the guide separately.
Is Huanglong Cave the same as Tianmen Cave?
No. Tianmen Cave is a natural arch high in the cliff of Tianmen Mountain, seen from the square below it on the way up. Huanglong Cave is an underground cave east of Wulingyuan. Both are in Zhangjiajie, a little over an hour apart by car.
Huanglong Cave or Longwang Cave?
Normally Huanglong. It is closer to Wulingyuan and better organised for guided visits. Longwang Cave reopened in March 2026, lies 17 km from Wulingyuan and costs CNY 70; go if you have time to spare.
