Xi’an to Zhangjiajie: Flights & Train Guide (1.5h)

From the Terracotta city of Xi'an to the mountains of Zhangjiajie.

Quickest route: Fly direct from Xi’an Xianyang (XIY) to Zhangjiajie Hehua (DYG) in about 1.5 hours, around US$85–170, with roughly 2 departures most days – the practical pick for almost every traveller.

Cheapest / most scenic: the one daily high-speed train to Zhangjiajie West (since 2025), about 9.5 hours at 683 RMB 2nd class / 1,094 RMB 1st class. Avoid if: you value your time – flying saves about 8 hours, so take the train only to skip flying or watch the landscape change.

The fastest way from Xi’an to Zhangjiajie is a direct flight of about 1.5 hours; the alternative is one daily high-speed train of roughly 9.5 hours, so most travellers fly.

Xi’an, home of the Terracotta Army, pairs beautifully with Zhangjiajie and its surreal “Avatar” mountains. The two cities sit on one of China’s most rewarding multi-city routes, blending ancient history with otherworldly scenery. Here is how to connect them, and how a foreign visitor actually books and boards.

By Air (Recommended)

Direct flights run from Xi’an Xianyang International Airport (XIY) to Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport (DYG) in about 1.5 hours, with a small number of departures most days. Flying is the clear first choice for this route: it turns a long overland journey into a short hop, leaving you far more time on the ground. Zhangjiajie’s airport is compact and close to the city, so transfers to your hotel or straight to the national park are quick.

By High-Speed Train

Since 2025 there is also a direct high-speed train from Xi’an to Zhangjiajie West Railway Station, taking about 9.5 hours with one departure a day (second class around 683 RMB, first class around 1,094 RMB). The ride is comfortable and scenic, crossing Shaanxi, Henan, Hubei and Hunan, but the length and the single daily service mean flying is usually the better use of your time. Consider the train mainly if you would rather not fly or want to watch the landscape change along the way.

How to Book and Board (for Foreign Visitors)

  • Flights: Book on an international site or airline app with your passport name exactly as printed. Arrive at the airport about 2 hours early for domestic flights and carry your passport for check-in and security.
  • Trains: Buy on the official 12306 platform or an English site such as Trip.com using your passport number. Tickets are paperless, so at the station you scan your passport at the gate to enter and board. Arrive 45-60 minutes early to clear security and find the right waiting area.
  • At the gate: Keep your passport in hand for both flights and trains. It is your ticket, your ID, and what you scan to board.

A Classic Pairing

Xi’an and Zhangjiajie are a favourite combination: the Terracotta Warriors and ancient city walls, followed by towering sandstone pillars, glass bridges and cable cars. It is a highlight of many of our multi-city China itineraries, and the connection is easy to fold into a longer trip.
